Robyn Silvernagle captures second provincial Scotties crown with 8-5 win over Sherry Anderson

Make it two provincial curling championships in a row for Robyn Silvernagle.

The North Battleford rink defeated Sherry Anderson 8-5 in Melville Tuesday to repeat as the winner of the Viterra Scotties. The two teams have met in three straight provincial finals.

After starting the game with a blank, Silvernagle was forced to take a single point in the second, opening with a 1-0 lead.

Sherry Anderson answered with a deuce in the third end, giving her a 2-1 lead.

Then, Silvernagle’s rink managed to score three in the fourth end, giving her a 4-2 advantage.

Silvernagle describes how her three-point end took shape in the fourth, as it ended up being the difference.

“It was actually a pretty wide-open end, and then there was two rocks at the back of the house, (third, Stefanie Lawton) loved the draw, she had thrown once there and I said ‘yeah, let’s make it,’” Silvernagle said. “We got a couple misses out of Sherry and we capitalized when we needed to.”

The trio was answered by a single by Anderson in the fifth, giving Silvernagle a 4-3 lead at the fifth end break.

With the hammer in the sixth, Silvernagle kept a clean house for a blank end. However in the seventh, Silvernagle had to through a double-takeout to clear the house, and her shot-rock stayed in the rings, giving her a single point.

In the eighth end, Silvernagle’s team took control of the top of the house, with three of her rocks blocking a draw to the four-foot. Anderson was forced to make a difficult take-out, which resulted in Silvernagle stealing a point. It ended up being the only steal during the game.

Anderson managed to bounce back with two points in the ninth, but Silvernagle responded with a game-winning double-takeout to score two in the 10th, and giving her rink the 8-5 win.

Silvernagle said she was glad the team was able to rest before this year’s provincial play-downs.
“You have to decide what’s more important: playing or practicing, and we did the practicing route just because we had played so much at the start of the season and up until Christmas,” Silvernagle said. “We weren’t worried that we hadn’t put in enough games.”
The North Battleford rink will now play in their second Scotties Tournament of Hearts representing Saskatchewan, but this time in front of a hometown crowd in Moose jaw starting February 15.

Silvernagle’s third Stefanie Lawton skipped the last Saskatchewan team to play at a Scotties held in Moose Jaw. She says the team is excited to play in front of a hometown crowd.

“Just having the crowd behind us, and the fans, and all of our family and friends as well there to support us is just going to be phenomenal,” Lawton said. “That support is something that we thrive on, we played in a couple of Slams as well in North Battleford and also in Saskatoon, and having our family and friends so close, it means the world to us.”
On the men’s side, Saskatoon’s Kirk Muyres looks to repeat as Sasktel Tankard champion while Regina’s Matt Dunstone looks for his first Brier appearance since 2018. The Tankard begins Wednesday in Melville with the first draw at 2:30.  620 CKRM’s Sportscage will come from Melville with Mitchell Blair.
