Unifor local 594 fined $250,000 for contempt of court

A Regina judge has handed Unifor 594 a fine of $250,000 dollars for contempt of court.

In a decision released Wednesday afternoon, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Neil Robertson rules the evidence presented to him overwhelmingly shows a December injunction where delays were told to be no longer than 10 minutes at the Co-Op refinery for those going in and out were not obeyed.

Federated Co-op lawyers were pursuing legal action against 594 President Kevin Bittman and Vice-President Lance Holowachuk. While Bittman was found not guilty, Holowachuk will need to take part in 40 hours of community service.

Unifor is being given the opportunity to give half of that fine to the Street Culture project, but Robertson says the other half be paid to the government because of the police resources that were deployed and provided at the expense of the public.

Robertson is also giving the refinery complex the ability to remove barricades.

Robertson also tells Federated Co-Op they can return to court with three days notice if breaches against the injunction continue, but he hopes that is not necessary.
