Saskatchewan farmers support new code of practice for grain producers

Saskatchewan farmers are showing support for a new code of practice for grain producers.

Western Canadian Wheat Growers chair Jim Wickett says the new voluntary code is being spearheaded by Cereals Canada.

Wickett sees it as a means to assure consumers that farmers are following practices to ensure food production is safe and healthy.

He says it is a good idea and will be similar to the beef sustainability and code of practice.

The code will cover a range of topics, including fertilizer management, pesticide use, soil management, farm workers, wildlife habitat, food and work safety.

This week the federal government announced 790 thousand dollars will go to the Canada Grains Council to help develop the voluntary code of practice for grain farmers.
