Regina Police warning public of street-drug threat following 20 overdoses over long weekend

Overdoses continue to be an increasing issue in Regina after police attended more incidents during the Family Day long weekend.

The Regina Police Service reports 20 overdoses occurred from Friday, Feb. 14 to Tuesday, Feb. 18. Officers attended 11 of those instances and utilized Naloxone (Narcan) three times.

There have been 62 total incidents of drug overdoses and two deaths reported to police in Regina since Jan. 1, 2020. 56 of the total overdoses happened between Feb. 7 to Feb. 18. Police attended 36 cases and administered Naloxone 14 times.

With the matter becoming a growing concern in the city, RPS is urging the public to be aware of the threats posed by street drugs such as fentanyl.

In a release sent on Tuesday afternoon, RPS is encouraging the importance of dialing 911 in the event of a drug overdose. Police are also reminding the public of the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, which protects anyone who is experiencing, or anyone who is present when someone else is experiencing, a drug overdose from charges for possession of a controlled substance when they call 911 for help.
