(Jamie) Sometimes I Wish Pedestrians Didn’t Have The Right-Of-Way

Yesterday afternoon I was driving east on Dewdney Avenue when three people decided to cross the road. There was nothing wrong with that, except for the fact that this didn’t happen at a set of lights and they didn’t even check for traffic! They just headed out on to the road and expected that everyone had to stop for them, which everyone did. Another twenty feet down the sidewalk would have put them at an intersection with a walk/don’t walk sign.

I see this all the time.

This morning I was driving on 4th Ave. when the same thing happened. There were two people walking on the sidewalk when they suddenly decided to take a leisurely stroll across the street without even checking for traffic. When I say a stroll, they were moving slower than a cab with a fare. I almost had to come to a complete stop to let them cross. They didn’t even look my way. I gave my horn a honk when I passed them and that got their attention. One guy gave me the one finger salute. Hey, at least he acknowledged me!

Obviously, pedestrians have the right-of-way, but sometimes it would be a lot more fun if they didn’t.
