Manitoba Hydro putting in new power transmission line to Saskatchewan

The government of Manitoba is going ahead with a new power transmission line running from Birtle to Saskatchewan, with funding from the federal government’s Investing in Canada’s Infrastructure plan.

Winnipeg M.P. Jim Carr, special adviser for the Prairies, made the announcement Monday.

“This (…) will allow for the distribution of surplus electricity for Manitoba from our power grid to SaskPower’s power grid, which will enhance system reliability for both provinces.”

Manitoba Central Services Minister Reg Helwer said it’s a 46 km, 230 kilo-volt line.

“This will allow Manitoba’s green, renewable energy to flow to our western neighbour, and reduce cumulative greenhouse gas emissions between the two provinces.”

Work is slated to start this summer, and be completed in June next year. When done, the line will allow for the export of up to 250 megawatts to Saskatchewan in 2022.
