Grain companies estimate losses of 9 to 10 million dollars a day in late delivery penalties because of a backlog in grain movement

Prairie grain companies say there is a major backlog of grain movement to port due to recent rail blockades.

The executive director of the Western Grain Elevators Association, Wade Sobkowich, says the disruptions to grain movement come at a steep cost to farmers and grain companies in contract penalties.

He says estimates the losses at 9 to 10 million dollars a day.

Sobkowich says grain sales are being deferred because of the blockade and other issues affecting grain movement.

He says it will take until September or October to get back to normal.

He says there are about 50 grain ships waiting to load grain at the West Coast, about double the usual amount.
