Nutrien continuing to monitor Vanscoy mine fire

No one was hurt as three storage tanks started on fire at the Nutrien Potash mine near Vanscoy.

The fire began at around 10:00 PM Saturday, and caused Saskatoon Fire Department to be deployed.

Nutrien spokesperson Will Tigley said they continue to monitor and manage the fire.

“The situation has improved over the past day, and the fire is decreasing in intensity to a level where we’re hoping to safely extinguish it (Monday).”

Tigley said production has paused since the fire.

“At the time of the fire, the Vanscoy site was operating at half-capacity, which reduces the impact to our business, so we’re going to still assess the impacts this will have on our production, but we’re expecting it to be minimal at the moment.”

There is still no known cause for the fire. It is also not known what impact this will have on future mine operations in Vanscoy.
