NDP leader Ryan Meili says Premier Scott Moe should be embarrassed by the actions of his education minister and that he should perhaps find another one.
Meili made the statement Wednesday after Gordon Wyant made remarks about both the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation and its president Patrick Maze.
“If they don’t return, Mr. Speaker, then Pat Maze, the president of the union, is the grinch that stole Hoopla,” said Wyant during Question Period.
“We saw a minister who is doubling down on his decision to insult the party he is negotiating with. He is accusing teachers of walking away from kids and we know who is walking away from kids is the Saskatchewan Party.” Meili said. “He then took it a step further by insulting one person in particular. How does he go back to the bargaining table in any reasonable fashion. How do they bargain in good faith?”
Wyant did admit when speaking to reporters after Question Period that his comments may have gone a little far, but he did not make any apologies and re-iterated Maze and the STF are to blame for high school basketball players seeing their season end prematurely with no provincial championship happening.
There’s people that want to know why these events are being cancelled. We think we need to make sure that we lay that right at the feet of the people who are responsible.” Wyant said
