Meili repeats call to postpone next week’s provincial budget

Finance Minister Donna Harpauer is scheduled to bring down a provincial budget on March 18th.  The NDP says with all that is happening globally because of COVID-19, there is no need for it to be delivered.

Leader Ryan Meili says the budget isn’t worth the paper it is printed on because of what is happening in the wake of the COVID-19 scare.   He says the impact it is having economically in Saskatchewan as well as the impact it is going to have on the Saskatchewan healthcare system means a great deal of work is needed in Saskatchewan to come up with an economic response

“What I am asking the Premier to do is postpone the budget because the one we have is no longer valid as it was written last month and this month is so different.  Meili said. “I would like him to call an all-party committee so that all parties can work together with major stakeholders like the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, the Universities, SARM and the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour to come up with a plan to tackle the issue the best way Saskatchewan can.”

Meili adds that he is not calling for a long-term postponement of the budget and that a two-week delay would be fine.
