Snowfall on the way for southern Saskatchewan

After spring-like weather over the last couple weeks, southern Saskatchewan is bracing for a swift wave of winter this weekend.

Environment Canada is calling for snowfall and winter storm warnings in the southwest corner of the province as a combination of two systems moves through.

Other regions in southern Saskatchewan will also want to have their shovels ready. Early estimates suggest the Regina area could receive four to eight centimetres of snow between Saturday and Sunday.

As of Friday afternoon, a winter storm warning is in effect for the Shaunavon-Cypress Hills-Maple Creek area, while a snowfall warning has been placed for Leader and Gull Lake.

Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said communities in that area will receive the most snow this weekend.

“They could receive 20 to 30 centimetres by the time everything is said and done,” explained Lang. “Along with the snow, we are expecting some strong winds to come along. 30 to 40 gusting to 50 or 60 kilometres per hour.”

Lang said it’s not the only thing the storm will bring to the province.

“We will see the whole system slope southward on Sunday and it will be replaced by some pretty cold air. So people should be prepared for the cold after this weekend.”

She added that people should make sure to check weather updates and the Highway Hotline if they have plans to travel this weekend.
