Sask farmers welcome Ottawa’s 5 billion dollar COVID-19 support plan

Saskatchewan farmers are applauding Ottawas decision to pump 5 billion dollars into the farm economy over the covid-19 outbreak.

SARM president Ray Orb says the 5 billion dollars in additional Farm Credit Canada lending capacity is welcome but more is needed.

He says farmers need a stronger message from the federal government.

He says SARM has been pushing for a GST rebate on grain drying and improved farm safety nets.

He hopes those changes will be included in the federal budget.

APAS president Todd Lewis says the additional 5 billion dollars in lending capacity through Farm Credit Canada will help with spring seeding.

But he says more will be needed, particularly to improve farm business risk management programs, because farm income has seen a huge drop yet agristability payments will be down this year.

He says it shows agristability is not doing what it is supposed to do.

Lewis also applauds a six month moratorium on loans under the farm cash advance program.
