Riders provide update after COVID-19 impacts start of CFL training camp

The General Manager of the Saskatchewan Roughriders says the team is doing their part during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Jeremy O’Day says no players or coaches have tested positive, and that he’s looking forward to the 2020 season regardless if it is shortened or not.

O’Day said he is in self isolation, and is still working from home.

“Basically, what I did is just moved my office from the stadium into my house, and brought as much stuff over that I needed for the time being, and just set up all of my screens, printers and computers, and set up a little office in my basement,” O’Day said. “It’s been okay.”

O’Day said the team has reached out to players to ensure they are staying healthy.

“Our biggest concern is just for the health and safety of all the players, so we really just reached out to them to give them some information on the virus and some of the guidelines that they can adhere to,” O’Day said. “Really encouraging them to try to stay as healthy as possible, and encouraging their families to do the same.”

O’Day said the team is preparing for any scenario, including a shortened season.

“I do feel really comfortable with the team we have in place because we are a veteran group,” O’Day said. “We brought a lot of our guys back, we tried to get as many guys back for this season, so I think that we’re well prepared if it’s a shortened training camp.”

O’Day says when it comes to pay, players have already been paid bonuses, and coaches are on yearly salaries.

There have not been any cuts to team staff or pay, but O’Day says as with any business, that is possible depending on the length of time the COVID-19 pandemic lasts.
