Sixth employee at Saskatoon Correctional Centre tests positive for COVID-19

Another corrections officer at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.

The Ministry of Corrections and policing made the announcement on Friday making this the sixth staff member to test positive at the centre. The employee has since been told to self-isolate at home.

Noel Busse, communications branch executive director, said they are working with public health authorities to determine who the individual has come into contact with within the facility and what measures need to be taken as a result.

The ministry believes there’s a possibility there could have been interaction with offenders.

“It’s important to note in some cases, when symptoms have been shown, the direction has been to self-isolate at home,” explained Busse.

“It’s not as if people are showing symptoms and continuing to interact with offenders. The direction has been to go home and self-isolate when symptoms appear or once a positive test has been done.”

When asked about possible transmission among staff, he couldn’t say how the ministry discovered their employees picked up the virus.

“We’re being very cautious about the personal health aspect of this and I can’t really get into more detail than that.”

Busse said there are currently no offenders that have been confirmed as having the virus at any correctional facilities in the province.
