Regina Sikh community lending a helping hand during pandemic

The Sikh community in Regina has stepped up during the COVID-19 crisis by offering free food and drinks.
Regina’s Guru Nanak Free Kitchen is a non-profit built around volunteers who have made time on weekends over the past couple years to serve food and supplies to residents.
In recent weeks, they have set up in the Golden Mile south parking lot to give away items such as almond milk, chick peas and hot food.
Volunteer coordinator Amar Sahota says they wanted to give back to the community.
“A couple of guys came up with the idea, we don’t need it, we are all doing good,” said Sahota. “We have been very blessed to be in Canada and living a good life, so why not do it for everybody? And if somebody needs it, why not do it for them?”
Volunteers have even stepped up with the emergency order protocols by physically distancing and wearing protective equipment when preparing and handing out goods.
Their efforts were even recognized by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during one of his daily updates last week to the country.
The Guru Nanak Free Kitchen offers their service on Sundays and on some Saturdays.
