Trudeau says there’s no timeline for when the economy will restart

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday there’s no firm timeline for the economy to restart once the coronavirus pandemic eases.

In his daily briefing in Ottawa, Trudeau was asked when people can go back to work, businesses to reopen, and kids get back to school.

“The reality is that it is going to be weeks still,” he responded. “We recognize that it is going to be important to get our economy going and that we will have to do it in phases and remain vigilant unit a vaccine against COVID-19 is found,” Trudeau said.

Meantime, Trudeau added more personal protective equipment is arriving in Canada, and is being sent to provinces.

The Prime Minister was also asked about travelling from Ottawa to Harrington Lake to visit his wife and children over Easter despite social distancing protocols.

“As I mentioned last week in my presentation after three weeks of my family living up at Harrington and me working here, I went to join them for Easter and we continued to follow all instructions from public health authorities,” Trudeau said.

Trudeau said starting Tuesday night, stronger quarantine measures for people returning from overseas take effect, including a requirement to self-isolate in a location like a hotel, if they have no specific destination.
