Growing up, did your school have a prom or just graduation? -Cody

Yesterday as I was listening to the Sportscage on CKRM, Michael Ball was talking about high school prom with his guest on air. It got me thinking about my high school days and how we never had a prom. In my experience, prom was never really a big thing in rural Saskatchewan, at least not in our area of the province anyway.

In Windthorst and Kipling we had high school graduation in June followed by a dance sometimes, but not all the time, and then the great big grad party out on someone’s farm, often in a machinery shed. It was a well supervised night that provided a lot of great memories, although it took a few days for those memories to pop up!

When I think of prom , I think of what big city kids do in the US. Perhaps it’s because a prom is usually featured in movies and on television shows that involve high school students. Sometimes a good ole fashioned horror movie centres around prom. Okay, maybe I’ve watched to many horror flicks on Netflix these days. Regardless, I feel bad for the 2020 students you may not be able to hold a prom or graduation because of the current pandemic we find ourselves in . It is my hope that these students will be able to hold a special event in the future to commemorate this big moment in their lives. Congratulations to the Saskatchewan classes of 2020.
