The unknown has been the biggest challenge for Riders’ new offensive coordinator Jason Maas

COVID-19 has created a lot of uncertainty around the sports world, and the CFL is no different.

Mitchell Blair spoke with the Saskatchewan Roughriders new offensive coordinator, Jason Maas on the Sportscage  Thursday, who has been conducting business from his home office in Edmonton.

Maas said the biggest challenge is trying to plan for the unknown, adding right now a lot of planning has been done with quarterback Cody Fajardo, and making sure he’s comfortable with the offensive plan Maas plans to run when the season eventually does start.

“The hardest part honestly has been the unknown, not knowing when you’re going to start and when you do start up how much time are we going to have for camp,” Maas said. “Right now that’s what you’re planning for is training camp, to teach your offence, defense and special teams, and it’s a challenge not knowing when or how long you’re going to get to do that,” said Maas.

As for working from home, Maas said that’s been the normal off season routine for him the past few years already.

“This is a lot like our off seasons are already, obviously if I was still with Edmonton I would be in the office more, but I did a lot of work from home during the off season the last few years, basically I set my basement up into a home office and I watch film and what not from down there.”

Maas added modern technology has made it easy to hold large meetings, or connect with players from a distance.

The CFL announced earlier this month that the season has been delayed until at least July.

Training camps were supposed to open May 17th.
