Canadian gov’t promises financial assistance for students during COVID-19

Justin Trudeau has again promised aid for students facing financial difficulties if they can’t get a summer job due to COVID-19.

During his briefing on Wednesday morning, the prime minister reiterated students may be eligible for up to $5,000 through the new Canada Student Service grant.

“We’re also going to be providing specific supports for First Nations, Inuit and Metis nation students,” shared Trudeau.

“For graduate students and those conducting research, we’re going to extend scholarships, fellowships and grants so your work can continue.”

In all, the package, which will be voted on Wednesday in Parliament, is worth $9 billion.

The prime minister also mentioned that Canada’s food supply is safe, even though several packing plants have seen outbreaks of the virus.

Trudeau said officials are working closely with the agricultural industry to ensure people get good, healthy food.

“Particularly as we embark upon the summer when there will be a need and an ability to get lots of fresh vegetables and produce from across the country, we need to ensure that we’re able to provide for that.”

Two beef packing plants in Alberta and two chicken processing plants have had workers infected.
