Regina Humane Society looking forward to their new home

The Regina Humane Society could soon have a new home of their own.

Regina City Council approved the plans for a new facility.

The building will be located in Harbour Landing and is valued at $20 million. The Humane Society has been in their current facility for the last 50 years.

Executive Director Lisa Koch said this was a long time coming.

“This is a 10 years in-the-making project, so the zoning for the new animal community centre was a big step for the Regina Humane Society,” Koch said. “It was an exciting day for animals as well as people in Regina.”

Koch said some of the new features in the future building include a catering kitchen, dog parks, and garden area.

“Because it’s an animal community centre, we recognize the relationship between animals and people,” Koch said. “Our classrooms spaces, and the catering kitchen, the gardening areas, are really about supporting those relationships so that we can offer programming to the public through the organization, but the public can also use the spaces for their own purposes after hours as well.”

Koch said when it comes to a fundraising campaign, there’s going to be more to come.

“We have relied on donors, estate donors to be able to support (this), Koch said. “We have raised some funds, but certainly, a capital campaign in the future is something that we’ll be looking at, but we’re not there yet.”

The Humane Society is hoping to be in their new facility within the next two and a half to three years.
