Trudeau announces extension to Canada-U.S. border closure

Fresh off the Victoria Day long weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau started his daily update on Tuesday morning by announcing an extension to the border closure.

“Canada and the United States have once again agreed to extend by 30 days the current measures in place along the border,” announced Trudeau.

“This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe.”

Trudeau mentioned that the federal government spoke frequently with the provinces over the last few weeks regarding the situation at the border. He said there was a “clear desire” to continue with those current measures.

The prime minister also addressed the Snowbirds tragedy that occurred over the weekend in Kamloops, B.C.

When asked if the Snowbirds should not fly at this time following the accident, he said they are taking safety very seriously.

“I think there are very good questions being asked by a whole lot of people about safety right now – first and foremost by the RCAF – and there is going to be a proper investigation,” said Trudeau.

“We’re going to allow them to do their work before we make assumptions about what might be the outcome of that investigation.”

He shared that Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan and others have been speaking with the families affected by the crash, adding that he will be speaking to those families soon.
