CFIB survey says 51 per cent of small businesses in Sask. are now fully open

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB)says more small businesses have been able to reopen their doors after being forced to close because of COVID-19.

As provinces begin reopening more parts of their economies during the pandemic, a CFIB survey shows that 51 per cent of small business owners in Saskatchewan that responded have opened up nine days into phase two of the Reopen Saskatchewan Plan. Saskatchewan only trails New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island at 54 per cent, which leads the provinces.

Marilyn Braun-Pollon, CFIB’s vice president of Western Canada and agri-business, said it’s more important than ever before to support local as more businesses prepare to reopen.

“We know that those businesses are going to be committed to reopening safely for their staff and customers. We really do encourage consumers to go support these local businesses in every way they can,” suggested Braun-Pollon.

“Go visit your favourite coffee shop, your favourite restaurant, the neighbourhood hardware store. It’s really important to encourage everyone to go out and give them our support.”

While the results are promising for the Land of Living Skies, business owners voiced many concerns in the survey.

Braun-Pollon said many of their members are trying to navigate through this uncertain time.

“We’ve asked our members what additional help would be useful,” she explained. “I think one of the things they will be looking for is regular assurance from health officials and the government that it is safe to work and shop again.”

Some of those concerns from business owners include having enough staff and personal protective equipment once they reopen and requirements around cleaning and disinfecting.

CFIB has also put together some tools and resources that small businesses can access for more information, including free access to their team of experts for one-on-one advice on all government support programs , a downloadable “Back to Business” kit and a “PPEs for SMEs” Facebook group where small businesses wanting to purchase PPE can connect with those that produce it.
