Riders DL Chad Geter talks about racism experienced in his life

Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive lineman Chad Geter joined Derek Taylor on the Sportscage Tuesday, to speak about protests taking place in Canada and the U.S. speaking out against racism and police brutality.

The 25-year-old Geter spoke about a former high school teacher in South Carolina, Mrs Elvis, who took the time to text Geter and apologize for the racism he has had to experience in his life, something that left Geter taken aback.

“For her to admit that yes it’s real and it’s happening and apologize for it happening to us, even though she didn’t treat us that way at all in school, but for her to apologize for the people that are doing it, it just made me so happy that she sent me that text,” Geter said.

Like many African Americans, Geter has experienced his own battles with racism.

“The craziest thing that I’ve ever experienced is just walking around and having people stare at you and follow you around, you’re shopping just like everyone else and you get followed, so I would just leave. It’s just things like that that add up for so many.”

Geter also remembers growing up in South Carolina where he says Confederate flags were flying freely until 2015.

Geter said he is currently in Charleston West Virginia, where protests have remained peaceful so far.
