The racial unrest in the United States is nothing new according to Riders GM Roy Shivers.

Shivers experienced it himself in the 60’s and 70’s and feels what we have seen over the past couple of weeks is somewhat tame compared to what he went through.

Shivers, who spoke with Michael Ball on 620 CKRM’s Sportscage Thursday, says he isn’t confident the situation will change for the better because of the actions of US President Donald Trump.

He does say though one thing is needed to get some equality in society.

“People have to listen,” Shivers said. “They think a lot of times when black people are complaining, we’re just complaining to be complaining and stuff. They don’t listen, they don’t read the message.”

Shivers says like many others he can’t believe what he saw in Minneapolis with the death of George Floyd.

During his time in Regina, some accused Shivers of showing favoritism to black players instead of white. He says that is a complete fallacy.

“(I’ve) heard that for years; when I was in B.C. I heard it, when I was in Calgary I heard it,” Shivers said. “My thing was I recruited the guys that I thought were the best football players, regardless of who they were, or what ethnicity they were.”

Shivers says he experienced a lot of name-calling growing up along with not being allowed to do certain things or go to certain places because of his skin.  He says living in California he didn’t believe that until he took a trip to the southern U-S and saw it first-hand.
