Saturday afternoon I was sitting on the couch when I suddenly heard a loud crack. I didn’t know where it came from, but I got up and had a look around. I couldn’t figure out what it was so I went back to watching TV. Ten minutes later my neighbour rang our front doorbell and told me to come outside because he wanted to show me something.
Apparently, a thick long branch from one of our trees out front had split at the trunk due to the wind. That was the crack I heard. He was outside in his back yard when he heard it and he went to investiagte. This branch was about 10 inches in diameter and about 30 feet long. I was just hoping it wouldn’t come down on anyone who was walking on the sidewalk in front of our house. That could have done some serious damage.
I called a tree cutting outfit on Sunday to come over and give me an estimate for removing the whole tree. I couldn’t leave that branch just waiting for the next big gust of wind to bring it down. The lady I talked to said they were already booking into the end of July. Wow. Apparently, I wasn’t the only person having this kind of problem.
She said they could do it sooner than July if it was an emergency. She also said an “emergency” situation costs more. Of course it does. I understood 100%. In other words, they would charge twice the money for doing the same amount of work because they have you over a barrel. No thank you.
Yesterday I borrowed my neighbour’s chainsaw and my buddy came over with his utility trailer. In less than 2 1/2 hours we had the entire tree down, loaded up, and ready to go.
Tree cutting is another one of those jobs that I’ve done and afterwards said to myself, “Man, am I ever glad I work in radio.”
To all of those hard working people out there, thank you. Yesterday I was one of you!
