SaskPower to boost Regina power grid

SaskPower announced that they are investing $20.5 million to bolster Regina’s electrical grid.

Crews will be replacing overhead and buried electrical cables, converting streetlights to LED bulbs, installing wildlife guards on transformers, as well as upgrading transformers.

SaskPower’s Scott McGregor says that the majority of the work will be done downtown.

“With the downtown area, you have a high concentration of businesses, a high concentration of people at the same time,” said McGregor. “For us to improve and update the power grid in the downtown area, it’s definitely a priority for us.”

SaskPower says they are committed to providing the most reliable and consistent service to their customers, which requires a significant level of investment.

McGregor says that most of the construction won’t affect anybody.

“Most of these projects that we are undertaking, most people won’t even notice them,” said McGregor. “They might see a SaskPower truck working on a street somewhere, pulling cable underneath that street. We’re going to do our best to keep the planned power outages to a minimum.”

As part of the construction, there will be occasional outages to ensure the work is done safely. More information on the planned outages can be found on SaskPower’s Twitter page or on their website.
