I don’t really think anyone was, or should be, surprised with the numbers in yesterday’s budget. All levels of government are spending what they can to keep us all afloat until we can ride this pandemic out.
I’ve got a crazy idea that could wipe out the deficit in one fell swoop. How about ticketing everyone who texts and drives?
I still don’t get it. Everyone knows using your cellphone in your vehicle is illegal, yet all you have to do is pull up to any red light and check the vehicles around you. I guarantee you’ll find at least one driver playing around on a cellphone.
And it’s not only at intersections when people are stopped that you’ll see this.
Yesterday I was driving on Sask. Drive in the right hand lane. I noticed everyone ahead of me was turning into the left lane to pass a car that was driving at a snails pace. When it was my turn to pass I noticed the reason the car was moving so slowly. There was a young woman behind the wheel that was paying more attention to her texting skills than she was her driving skills.
I’ve even noticed the same problem on the highway. How in the world can you text someone while you’re driving 110 clicks? I don’t think I would have done that in my wild and crazy days. I was never that wild or that crazy. That’s just dangerous, plain and simple.
Were these people shut up in a cave somewhere when the government announced bigger fines for texting and driving as of last February?
It must be baffling for those trying to figure out how to tackle this problem. Everyone knows it’s illegal, but no one seems to care. What punishment could be meted out that would finally make drivers realize texting and driving is a bad idea? Will even larger fines do the trick?
I hate to admit it, but maybe it’s time to bring back the “bus cops.”
