The Western Hockey League says it is hopefully full steam ahead for the 2020-21 season.
Following what has already been announced in the Ontario and Quebec Leagues, the WHL says it intends to play a full 68-game schedule starting October 2.
The league made their plans known Wednesday after holding its annual general meeting. A release from the league says the return-to-play plan “remains contingent on receiving the necessary approvals from government and health authorities in each of the six jurisdictions in WHL territory.”
The statement does not say whether or not fans would be allowed inside the various rinks and that further discussions are needed with local authorities before a decision can be made. It adds the WHL is a spectator-driven league and the welcoming back of WHL fans is vital to a successful return to hockey for all 22 member clubs.
The 2019-20 season was cancelled shortly before the end of the regular season due to COVID-19.
