A couple of weeks ago after work I went home and tossed Charlie, our cat, into a pet carrier and whisked him over to a pet groomer. He wasn’t getting a fancy haircut or anything like that. He was off to get his nails trimmed. His nails were getting a little too long and all we’d hear when he was walking on the hardwood floors was the sound of click, click, click. It was getting rather annoying and I don’t imagine it was very comfortable for him either.
I found myself a groomer that cuts cat nails after my disastrous attempt at doing it myself last year. I ended up with a nasty injury to my thumb that bled like hell and took over a week to heal. My cat nail clipping experiment started and ended that very same day. I needed someone with experience for this job.
We’ve had Charlie for around 12 years, but have only had to worry about clipping his nails in the past year. He used to use his scratching post or even pull his old nails off with his teeth. We’d find those things everywhere, but haven’t in quite a while. It seemed odd that he wouldn’t do anything to help shed his old nails anymore, but I googled this and found it’s quite common for this to happen with older cats.
The worst part of getting his nails clipped is the drive to grooming salon. The cat just doesn’t stop meowing. It’s not a pleasant meowing either. It’s a low guttural meowing, like he’d just as soon have me shot for cooping him up in that carrier and hauling him across the city. He certainly doesn’t enjoy a car ride as much as our dog does.
The best part of getting his nails clipped? The price. Only $20.
I almost spent that much on Band-Aids after I tried clipping his nails!
