Boy who set December’s fire at north Regina Walmart is sentenced

The 12-year-old boy responsible for starting a fire at the Walmart on Rochdale Boulevard has been sentenced.

The boy, who had earlier pleaded guilty to a charge of arson and uttering threats towards an elementary school, was sentenced by a judge in Regina Youth Court to a recommended sentence of six months deferred custody followed by 18 months probation.

On December 11, the boy walked into the store and lit a fire in the paper towels aisle causing over 10 million dollars damage to the building and stock resulting in a closure during the busy final days of Christmas shopping.  The store did not re-open until January.

The sentence includes conditions which call for the boy to stay away from the Walmart or the school in question unless he is accompanied by an adult and to take fire safety education.
