NDP concerned about emergency room closures in rural Sask

The NDP is alarmed at the closure of emergency rooms in hospitals in rural Saskatchewan.

Opposition critic Vicki Mowat says the Davidson Health Centre saw 230 days without service between 2013 and 2018.

She adds there have been 12 emergency room closures in rural Saskatchewan.

She says Preeceville went 59 days without a functioning ER.

Health minister Jim Reiter says rural emergency rooms were temporarily closed for several reasons including doctor recruitment, staff training and COVID-19.

But he says rural emergency rooms have re-opened or are about to re-open.

He adds when the NDP were in government, they simply closed rural hospitals.
