Morgan hopes indigenous person can be new chair of Public Complaints Commission

The province’s justice minister says if all goes well, he would like an indigenous person to replace Brent Cotter as the chair of the Public Complaints Commission.

Cotter, who is now a Senator, has said he will stay as chair until a replacement is found with Morgan saying talks are underway to find that replacement with talks being had with both the Federation of Saskatchewan Indigenous Nations and the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan.

“I think it would be desirable for it to be a First Nations person,” Morgan said. “What it must be is somebody that they’re satisfied with.”

He adds achieving this would be good for the Commission, which will be taking an expanded role for overseeing police after the Police Amendment Act was tabled earlier this month.

“I think for First Nations and Metis people in our province to have confidence in the system, they would have a higher level of confidence knowing that we were willing to appoint somebody who’s First Nations or Metis ancestry.” Morgan said. “Those are the directions that we can and should go.
