Despite dozens of claims, hail damage in Saskatchewan relatively light

The Canadian Crop Hail Association has released a report showing heavy crop damage from early summer hail storms in some areas.

The president of the Canadian Crop Hail Association, Rick Omelchenko, says hail storms struck in late May, early and mid-June.
So far, there are over 60 claims in Saskatchewan with mostly light to medium damage.
“The cereals seem to have taken it very, very well, canola and the pulses, a little bit harder,” said Omelchenko. “There’s some defoliation on the canola, and some of the pea crops have some bruising and some nodes knocked off. But, because of the early stage of growth, they seem to be recovering well so far.”
So far, he says Alberta has been the hard-hit area.
Omelchenko says over 200 hail claims have been made across the prairies so far this year.
