North and South Saskatchewan Rivers expected to rise dramatically this weekend

Two of the province’s major rivers could see water levels rise by as much as five feet over the next few days.

The Saskatchewan Water Security Agency says heavy rain in southern Alberta means the amount of water flowing into Lake Diefenbaker will dramatically increase by Sunday meaning a decision has been made to open the Gardiner dam spillway to raise river levels on the South Saskatchewan downstream.

The agency says no flooding is expected, but you are asked to stay away from fast-moving water.

Meanwhile, the North Saskatchewan River is expected to see higher streamflows than normal at around 1,500 cubic meters per second.
