Saskatchewan truck driver facing many charges in Manitoba after horrific accident west of Winnipeg

A 56-year-old truck driver from Saskatchewan is facing multiple charges in Manitoba after crashing his semi-trailer into a row of vehicles waiting to pass through a construction zone west of Winnipeg Thursday morning,

The crash killed a seven-year-old girl and a 61-year-old man along with injuring 15 others on Highway 2 near the town of Fannystelle which is about fifty kilometers west of the Manitoba capital.

RCMP say the vehicles were stopped in the eastbound lane of the highway just before noon and were waiting for direction to safely drive through when the semi did not stop and drove into eight vehicles.

Of the 15 injured, six had to be taken to hospital. Three of those six have since been released with the other three, a 22-year old woman, a 14-year-old girl and a 10-year old girl, suffering injuries said to be serious.

The name of the driver and his hometown have not been released. He faces two counts each of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death and criminal negligence causing death, the release. He is also charged with three counts of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm.

An investigation into what happened continues.
