Construction of hotel and spa on Whitecap Dakota First Nation continues

Sixteen years after the Dakota Dunes Golf Links opening and 13 years after the casino opening, there are 2 more projects on the way for the Whitecap Dakota First Nation.

Chief Darcy Bear says construction of a 155-room hotel is nearing completion.

The work continued through the closing down of the economy earlier in the year, but there were some snags because of the pandemic.

All of the safety guidelines were put in place, and the budget was impacted because some of the materials were coming from China, so they had to find substitute suppliers and their prices were a bit higher.

The hotel was originally scheduled to open this summer.

Now it’s expected to open mid to late September, but Chief Bear says sadly, they will have to open to COVID-19 guidelines.

Another piece in the Dakota Dunes resort plan is a full service spa.

Bear says it is in the design stage right now, with construction to begin next year and opening in 2022.

Bear estimates the hotel will have a staff of 125 to 140 people and they will be recruiting the first 60 soon.

Some of the highlights of the building are an indoor pool and fitness centre, and on-site restaurant and bar and a large outdoor terrace.
