Canada to issue retaliatory tariffs after U.S. slaps 10% tariff on Canadian aluminium

Over the next 30 days, the federal government is looking for input from Canadians and Canadian businesses as to the potential impact on Canada because of the U.S. trade action.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says there will be retaliation after a 10% import tariff on Canadian aluminum was announced Thursday by the U-S president.

“So the consultation list is broad, the final tariffs that we impose will be — as I said — perfectly reciprocal, dollar for dollar,” Freeland said. “The total amount will be $3.6 billion.”

Freeland called the tariffs on Canadian aluminum absurd.

“At a time when we are fighting a global pandemic, working on both sides of the Canada-U.S. border to prevent loss of life and preserve jobs, a trade dispute is the last thing anyone needs,” Freeland said. “It will only hurt the economic recovery on both sides of the border.”

She notes any American who buys aluminium products will suffer. The tariffs were announced by U-S President Donald Trump at an American Whirlpool plant. Freeland says those washing machines will become more expensive for Americans with these tariffs.
