Harvest reaches one percent in Saskatchewan

Harvest is getting underway across Saskatchewan with one percent of the crop in the bin.

The latest provincial crop report says the five year average for this time of year is two percent combined.

52 percent of fall rye, 19 percent of winter wheat, six percent field peas and three percent of lentils are now in storage.

Harvest is most advanced in the south and west-central areas, with 2 percent combined in the southwest and one percent in the southeast and west-central area.

Producers in central and northern regions have less than one percent in the bin but many expect to start in coming weeks.

Much of the province received small amounts of rain this past week, with some areas getting half an inch to an inch.

The Broadview area in the southeast had the most rain at 39 millimeters.

St. Walburg has received the most rain since the start of April at 433 millimeters.

More rain is needed in some areas to help crops during the seed-filling stage.

Cropland topsoil moisture is rated 51 percent adequate, 37 percent short and 12 percent very short.

The majority of crop loss this past week was caused by wind, dry conditions, heat, wildlife and grasshoppers with isolated cases of hail.

Many producers are reporting hay yields are below average.

Estimated average dryland hay yields for the province are 1.2 tons per acre for alfalfa and one ton for hay.
