Freeland officially replaces Morneau as finance minister

OTTAWA – Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has officially been named Canada’s new finance minister.

Everyone in attendance wore a mask and the chairs were spaced well apart in Rideau Hall as Chrystia Freeland was sworn in on Tuesday afternoon as the country’s first female finance minister.

She removed her mask as she took the oath and then replaced it before bumping elbows with the prime minister and the governor general.

Freeland is also keeping her role as deputy prime minister.

New Brunswick MP Dominic LeBlanc is taking over her job handling the intergovernmental affairs portfolio.

As the minister of finance, Freeland will help shepherd the government through the biggest economic recovery since the Great Depression.
