Trudeau expected to name Chrystia Freeland next Finance Minister

Multiple reports say the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is going to name Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland the next Finance Minister on Tuesday.

Once named to the post Freeland would be the first woman to hold the title.

It’s expected Freeland would remain deputy prime minister, but her intergovernmental affairs role could be re-assigned during an expected cabinet shuffle.

Freeland will now be tasked with guiding Canada through a deficit that has swelled to more than $343-million dollars, largely thanks to COVID-19 relief spending.

Former finance minister Bill Morneau announced his resignation last night from the position, adding that he will not be seeking re-election for Toronto-Centre after almost five years.

In a news conference Monday evening, Morneau said he felt he was not the person to continue to lead Canada out of the COVID-19 financial crisis.
