Yorkton to get new mayor as Maloney announces he will not be running in civic election

For the first time since 2012, the city of Yorkton will have a new mayor.

Current mayor Bob Maloney announced Monday in front of city hall that he will not run for re-election at this fall’s municipal elections, stating it was time for him to step back.

Maloney was first elected as a city councilor in 2003 and held that position until he ran for the mayor’s office in 2012.

Many projects have been completed in Yorkton during Maloney’s time as councilor and mayor, including the renovation of the Gallagher Centre, construction of a brand new fire hall, a $34-million water plant, a new Civic Operation Centre, plus $34-million worth of drainage work throughout the city.

While Maloney hasn’t made any decisions for his future, he is confident that he’s leaving the city in great shape for the next elected mayor of Yorkton.
