The Regina High Schools Athletic Association has chosen not to allow intercollegiate and inter-school competitions for the 2020 fall season. The decision affects football, soccer, cross country and volleyball seasons.
In a release sent out late Thursday afternoon, RHSAA Commissioner Aaron Anderson stated the decision was made after “carefully considering numerous options regarding RHSAA’s return to fall
sports”, especially in light of the ministry of health and Saskatchewan Health Authority’s COVID-19 guidelines.
Anderson noted the importance of student and staff safety in the decision.
“We thank you for your continued patience, good will and hard work on behalf of Regina’s high school student athletes,” reads the statement from Anderson.
With the cancellation of the fall season, all RHSSA schools will have the option within their school only to coordinate and organize extra-curricular athletics, practices or intramurals. Participation will be predicated on agreement from administration, athletic directors, coaches and student athletes.
The release continues by saying participation will adhere to the mini-league recommendations within the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan and Government of Saskatchewan guidelines. Information on the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s return to play strategy can be found here.
High schools that choose to operate in-school only volleyball, football, cross-country and soccer practices, inter-squad competitions and drills will have to follow the following start up and completion dates:
- cross country running – Monday, September 28 to Saturday, October 17, 2020
- football – Monday, September 28 to Saturday, November 14, 2020
- soccer – Monday, September 28 to Saturday, October 31, 2020
- volleyball – Tuesday, October 13 to Saturday, November 28, 2020
Due to the unpredictability of COVID-19, Anderson mentions that any of the directions are subject to change on short notice. A decision regarding winter sports will be made at a later date.
The RHSAA represents Regina Catholic Schools, Regina Public Schools, Luther College, Huda School, Laval École, Regina Christian School and Harvest City Christian Academy.
