SaskParty reminds voters of NDP’s healthcare record

Saskatchewan’s two main political parties are taking jabs at one another Saturday over healthcare.

During a campaign stop in Saskatoon on Saturday, NDP leader Ryan Meili chastised the Saskatchewan Party while announcing his party’s plan for healthcare which includes the hiring of new doctors and nurses along with making an investment in mental health.

Meili also stated again that should the Saskatchewan Party be re-elected October 26, people in the province can expect cuts.

That prompted a release from the Saskatchewan Party in which they wanted to remind everyone of the NDP’s track record on healthcare when in power.

In that release, the Saskatchewan Party states the comments from Meili are the same ones used in the 2007, 2011 and 2016 campaigns and that if Meili wants to talk about cuts in healthcare he should mention the fact that the NDP closed 52 hospitals, lost 450 nurses and 173 doctors from 2001 to 2006 and that Saskatchewan had the longest surgical wait times.

The release went on to say the Saskatchewan Party’s committment to healthcare has been clear and that if re-elected, the government will move forward with the construction of urgent care centres in Regina and Saskatoon, a new hospital in Weyburn and a significant expansion to Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert.
