Crime numbers down 30 percent in Regina

Monthly crime numbers in Regina show a dramatic decrease in many areas.

There are 4,400 fewer crimes against people and property from September a year ago, meaning a decrease of over 30 percent, with auto thefts down 50 percent and mischief and willful damage down almost 25 percent.

“Some of it I believe is COVID related, others has to do with enforcement efforts,” Police Chief Evan Bray said during a meeting of the Board of Police Commissioners on Tuesday.

While many numbers are down, drug-related crimes are up almost 25 percent.  Bray believes additional enforcement is behind that.

“There is more drug use and activity in the community, but our enforcement efforts have been constant throughout the year.” Bray said.  “In fact, I believe that’s a big part of what drives that number.”
