CFL makes changes for 2021 draft

The Riders could end up with the first pick in the 2021 CFL Draft.

The league announced changes for next spring’s draft, though not a date for it.

The draft order in the first round will be determined by a random draw. Normally the order is assigned by record. But with no games being played in 2020, the CFL has chosen a random draw.

They will also use a “snake” format for the draft. A “snake” format means that teams’ picks will come in inverse order of how they chose in the previous round. For example, the team with the first pick in the first round will get the last pick in the second round. And then the first pick in the third round, and so on.

The 2021 CFL Draft will be six rounds long instead of the usual eight. The league says this change is to accommodate the 2020 and 2021 draft classes both having their rookie years at the same time.

As well, players who are eligible for the 2021 Draft will have the option to defer their draft year to 2022.

The league says the draft will be in the spring at a date to be determined.
