City of Regina ready for weekend snowstorm

With a snowstorm expected to dump 30 plus centimetres of snow on the Queen City Sunday, Regina’s Roadways and Transportation Director Chris Warren says they’re ready.

Warren says the city’s priorities during a snow event like this is to keep people safe and traffic moving.

“During a snow event, we work to keep major roads drivable by plowing snow and applying ice control at high-risk intersections,” said Warren. “This means our focus is on high speed roads, roads with the greatest volumes of traffic, and emergency routes for our emergency services.”

A majority of the snow if forecast to fall Sunday night, which could make it difficult for voters to make their way to the polls for Monday’s municipal election.

Warren says the city has adjusted its plan to include roads leading to poll stations around the city.

“It’s a prioritization,” said Warren. “The number of polling stations is something that we can take care of during the cleaning of our priority routes, and we’re confident that we’ll be able to achieve that during the night shift.”

Warren took the time to encourage residents to plan ahead and be safe during the snowstorm.

“If you can’t drive because of the snow, we would always encourage our residents to use Regina Transit, and we ask residents to slow down and be safe,” said Warren. “When you come across our winter maintenance equipment, stay back at least 3.5 car lengths from our plowing equipment, and just ensure that you’re safely accessing our roadway network.”
