Flegel promises new aquatic centre in Harbour Landing

Regina Mayoral Candidate Jerry Flegel promised to build a new community aquatic centre in Harbour Landing if elected on Monday.

He says it’s important for communities to have leisure centres, something that the south end of the city is lacking.

“As council, we always talk about a complete neighbourhood, without a recreational facility, a swimming pool, an exercise room, a community centre room, all these different types of things,” said Flegel. “Harbour Landing is one of the areas that is missing this.”

Flegel did not give an idea as to where the facility would be built, or where the money for the facility would come from.

He says with the population in Harbour Landing booming, it’s time to have a facility for them to call their own.

“With the influx of young families, young people, this is the type of project that we need,” said Flegel. “It’s not much different than when the Schmirler and the North West Leisure Centre were built, they were growing areas and now again they’re busting at the seams and more facilities are needed. So, this is Regina doing its part to encapsulate the communities.”

Flegel has campaigned on the promise to build out of the pandemic, which is something that he says will help everybody.

“In recovery you talk cuts, and I don’t like cuts, I don’t like talking about cuts,” said Flegel. “Building gives you a sense of ownership, it gives you a sense of stability, and it gives you a sense of pride that you’re going to make this a better place.”

Flegel also reiterated his promise to develop both the Dewdney rail yards and the old Taylor Field site.
