Friend of Regina woman killed glad to hear improvements will likely come to dangerous intersection

A friend of the 21-year-old woman killed this week when she was hit by a large vehicle owned by the City is glad to hear there is talk of improvements.

The comments from Ashley Gottselig come after Michael Fougere said if re-elected as mayor Monday, he will work on making the intersection on the 4500 block of Albert Street safer by getting a lighted crosswalk installed.

Gottselig is glad to hear that, but believes traffic lights are a better option.

“People would have to stop if there was a red light right?” Gottselig, who started an online petition to get the intersection changed, said. “Between the first light at Gordon Road, there isn’t an actual light for some distance so having traffic lights there would deal with the speed issue.”

Like the woman who was killed, Gottselig crosses at that intersection twice a day as she goes to and from work.  She says it can be a terrifying experience.

“Not only is the traffic flow high, but vehicles don’t stop.  They will look directly at you as you are crossing the street and they just go.” Gottselig said. “There have been many times that I have not felt safe and others have said the same thing.”

Gottselig is happy to hear that mayoral candidates she has spoken to about that piece of road are in agreement that something needs to be done to improve safety.
