Will Reginans decide for a change in leadership Monday night or will Michael Fougere be re-elected to his 3rd term as mayor. It is one of many things that will be decided as a civic election is held with many casting a vote in less than ideal weather conditions with many having done so already in advance or mail-in polls.
Fougere, who succeeded Pat Fiacco as Regina’s mayor in 2012, has been no stranger to City Hall as he served as the councillor for Ward 4 for a number of years before assuming the mayor’s chair.
Eight others are opposing Fougere for mayor with perhaps his strongest competitor being someone who entered the world of civic politics for the first time.
Sandra Masters, who resigned from her role as board chair of Regina Exhibition Association Limited (REAL) board of directors in an attempt to become the city’s second female mayor, has run a campaign that has resonated with many.
Former Ward 10 councillor Jerry Flegel is taking his first run at the mayor’s chair. Flegel is looking to spur some downtown revitalization by renewing the vacant railyards and building a new baseball stadium for the Regina Red Sox and the community as a whole.
Tony Fiacco and Darren Bradley have also run very solid campaigns as they give Reginans something to think about when it comes to who should be mayor for the first time in many years. There has been some solid debate on how the city will be run over the next four years on a variety of issues including the economy, revitalizing the downtown core, mental health, and the pandemic.  Others seeking the mayor’s job are Jim Elliott, George Wooldridge, Mitchell Howse and Bob Pearce.
While we know that Lori Bresciani will be on the next council having been acclimated in Ward 4, the new set of councillors will have at least two new faces. With Flegel running for mayor, it leaves eight people looking to succeed him in Ward 10 and with Mike O’Donnell retiring in Ward 8, there are five candidates looking to take his spot.
Voting begins across the city at 9 a.m with the polls closing at 8 p.m..
