Hopkins says new council doesn’t have time to ease into responsibilities

Regina will have a definite new look at City Hall when council meets later this month after Monday night’s election.

Five new councillors and a new mayor will give a fresh new look on things, but the group won’t have a lot of time to slowly get used to the work in front of them.

John Hopkins is the CEO of the Regina and District Chamber of Commerce. He says one of the first orders of business will be huge.

“The first test will be the City budget and they will get perspectives from throughout the community about what’s important to people. “Hopkins said. “Clearly from our perspective, its about growing the economy and creating opportunities for economic growth and businesses.  It will be a steep learning curve for the new council to navigate as they react to that.  It’s not an easy document to go through.

While Hopkins can’t say how much of a role inexperience might play with the group that sees a new mayor and five new councillors, he says it will be tough to fill the void left from the 23 years Michael Fougere had whether it be serving as a councillor or the mayor.

“Michael had a lot of experience and Sandra (Masters) doesn’t have a lot of experience being a politician, but she ran a good campaign and we will work with her to grow the city and create opportunities for people in the community.”
